Through our multiple trials, we found that the best way to record or mic a guitar is with a dynamic mic placed to the right side of the amp and a condenser mic a few feet away. Choosing whether to have the condenser set on omni or cardioid seems like more of a personal preference; I preferred the cardioid sound because it was a little less bright than the omnidirectional.
Dynamic with Condenser set on Omnidirectional:
Dynamic with Condenser set on Cardioid:
When we recorded with JUST dynamic or JUST condenser, the sounds were exponentially different:
Dynamic:
Condenser (set on omni):
Condenser (set on cardioid):
The two different condenser settings didn't sound TOO different, although the difference is audible. The omnidirectional setting on the mic sounded a lot thicker than the cardioid.
